A relaxed August wedding at The William Cecil in Stamford, featuring an outdoor ceremony and portraits at the Burghley Estate. See Helen & Stephen's wedding gallery.
If you've spent any time looking for a Stamford wedding photographer, chances are you've come across The William Cecil. Sitting on the edge of the Burghley Estate, it's one of the town's best-known wedding venues, and somewhere I've been fortunate enough to photograph many times over the years. Helen and Stephen's August wedding reminded me exactly why I enjoy working here so much. Everything happened in one place, from the morning preparations through to the evening celebrations, which always helps the day feel relaxed. Guests can settle in without travelling between venues, the gardens provide plenty of space for everyone to enjoy themselves, and having the Burghley Estate quite literally on the doorstep gives us access to some of the best wedding portrait locations in Stamford.
August can be unpredictable, but this particular day delivered exactly the sort of conditions I hope for as a photographer. The sky stayed overcast for most of the day, creating soft, even light that works beautifully for wedding photography. While sunshine often gets all the attention, cloud cover is often the better option. It allows people to stay comfortable during an outdoor ceremony and creates flattering light throughout the day without harsh shadows or squinting. Helen and Stephen exchanged their vows outside in The William Cecil's gardens, surrounded by family and friends. With everything taking place in the hotel grounds, the whole day flowed naturally from one part to the next without feeling rushed.
One of the biggest advantages of getting married at The William Cecil is its location. The Burghley Estate sits immediately next door, making it one of my favourite places for couple portraits. It offers huge variety within a short walk - open parkland, mature trees, long avenues and beautiful natural backdrops that feel completely different from the hotel gardens while still being only a few minutes away. For Helen and Stephen, we slipped away for a short walk across the estate while guests enjoyed drinks and garden games back at the venue. You don't need hours away from your wedding for photographs like these. Twenty minutes of relaxed walking, chatting and taking everything in is usually more than enough.
If you're planning your own wedding in the area, I've put together a guide to planning a wedding in Stamford, including some of my favourite portrait locations around the Burghley Estate and the town centre.
One thing that stood out throughout Helen and Stephen's wedding was how relaxed everything felt. There was no pressure to stick rigidly to a timetable or constantly move people from one location to another. Guests spread out across the gardens, garden games kept everyone entertained during the afternoon, and there was always something happening without the day ever feeling hectic. If you're looking for natural, documentary-style wedding photography, you can browse more examples throughout my wedding portfolio. Rather than interrupting moments or directing every interaction, I can simply observe what's happening and capture the day as it unfolds naturally. Some of my favourite photographs rarely happen during the obvious parts of a wedding. They're often found in the conversations between friends, children running across the lawn, someone quietly watching the ceremony from the back, or family members laughing together during drinks outside.
Those are the moments that tell the real story of a wedding day.
Although I photograph weddings across the UK, Stamford will always feel like home. Having lived in Stamford for many years, it's a town I know exceptionally well, and that familiarity makes a genuine difference on a wedding day. Knowing where the light works best, where to escape if the weather changes, and which locations suit different times of year all help make the photography feel effortless. The William Cecil is a venue I return to regularly, and every wedding feels slightly different despite the familiar surroundings. Some couples make full use of the Burghley Estate, others stay entirely within the hotel grounds, while some plan winter weddings around cosy indoor spaces instead. That's part of what makes it such a versatile wedding venue.
If you're still searching for a venue, I've also photographed weddings at several other locations around the town. You can find more real weddings and planning advice on my Stamford wedding photographer page.
