A relaxed pre-wedding shoot at Burghley Estate with perfect evening light, natural moments and a four-legged guest who stole the show.
While Burghley House is one of Stamford's best-known landmarks, the surrounding estate stretches for hundreds of acres, with plenty of lesser-known locations that are just as beautiful for engagement photography.
One of the things I always tell couples is that engagement shoots don't need much to be memorable. A beautiful location certainly helps, but more often than not it's the people - and occasionally the dog - that make the photographs. For Amy and Will's Burghley Estate engagement shoot, we couldn't have asked for better conditions. Warm evening sunshine, completely still weather and the kind of golden light photographers quietly hope for every time they check the forecast. Add their dog, Albie, into the mix, and it became one of those sessions that felt effortless from beginning to end.
Although their wedding will take place at the beautiful Revesby Estate in Lincolnshire, we decided to meet a little closer to home for their pre-wedding shoot. Rather than photographing around the house itself, we explored one of the quieter, lesser-known areas of the Burghley Estate. Living in Stamford means I'm lucky enough to know these hidden corners, where ancient trees, open parkland and peaceful paths provide beautiful backdrops away from the busier parts of the estate. One of the things I love about Burghley is that you don't have to be standing in front of the house to make the most of it. Some of my favourite spots are tucked away in the quieter corners of the estate, where mature woodland, open grassland and winding paths create a completely different feel. It's peaceful, naturally beautiful and perfect for couples who want photographs that feel relaxed rather than overly formal.
Amy and Will were no different.
The evening quickly settled into an easy rhythm as we wandered through the estate, stopping whenever the light caught our attention. The conditions really couldn't have been better, with soft sunshine filtering through the trees before opening out into the wider landscape. Burghley has a way of changing character every few minutes, which means every corner offers something slightly different.
Then there was Albie.
It's fair to say he had no intention of staying in the background. Whether he was charging through the long grass, demanding attention between photographs or deciding exactly where everyone should stand, he brought so much personality to the session. Dogs have a brilliant way of helping couples relax because the focus naturally shifts away from the camera. Some of my favourite photographs from the evening weren't planned at all—they simply happened while Amy and Will laughed at whatever Albie decided to do next. It's one of the reasons I encourage couples to bring their dog if they're thinking about an engagement shoot. They're part of your story too, and they almost always become the unexpected highlight of the session.
As a Stamford wedding photographer, I'm fortunate to spend plenty of time photographing around the Burghley Estate, and it's often these quieter parts that I find myself returning to. Knowing where the best light falls, which paths stay peaceful and how the landscape changes with the seasons allows me to create photographs that feel personal to each couple, rather than relying on the same well-known locations every time.
Next time I see Amy and Will, we'll be swapping the parkland of Burghley for the incredible surroundings of Revesby Estate for their wedding day. If their engagement shoot was anything to go by, it's going to be full of laughter, great light and plenty of natural moments - and if Albie makes another appearance, I certainly won't be complaining.
